5.)                           While it is often acceptable to begin sentences with coordinating conjunctions such as "and" or "but," try not to do this excessively in formal writing. This will make your work more difficult for the reader to understand and can be seen as a sign of poor writing.

15.)        Each paragraph in your essay should have a clear topic sentence so that it is clear what each paragraph is about.

16.)        Avoid using "very" in formal writing when possible since it can make your writing seem informal and immature. It is also often redundant when used to describe the same noun over and over again.

17.)        If you're using semicolons, make sure that each of the items on either side of the semicolon is grammatically correct. This means avoiding run-on sentences or fragments.
